The Utah Pride Center acknowledges the importance of family support for the LGBTQ community. Our Family Preservation Program is designed to promote the safety and well being of the entire family. To do this, we provide on-going support, education and resources for parents and guardians. Founded on evidence-based research, we offer practices that will enhance parents' ability to create a safe, nurturing and accepting home environment. Utah Pride partners with chapters of PFLAG UTAH (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) to engage local families in the acceptance and affirmation of LGBTQ individuals in their communities. The Family Preservation Program facilitates trainings, support groups, community gatherings and advocacy efforts.
Activities
LGBTQ Cultural Competency Trainings
In collaboration with other Utah Pride Center programs and PFLAG volunteers, this service helps adults to build their own LGBTQ cultural competency. Trainings are ideal for all community members, with a special focus on the following supportive professions:
- Teachers and educators who strive to create accepting environment in their classrooms
- Pediatricians and family physicians who want to be prepared to support their clients to have affirming, healthy homes
- Parents and guardians looking to build acceptance and awareness within their families.
Embracing Families Network
The network provides an educational space for allied parents and guardians from all walks of life. The network is inclusive of families from diverse ethnic and religious communities. The purpose is to create a safe environment for families to share their stories, and to develop tools to address the discrimination and oppression that exists in their communities.
