Transgender Awareness Month is Here!
The Utah Pride Center is hosting a month-long series of activities for Transgender Awareness Month. The project is being led by TransAction, a youth-oriented group that meets weekly to do transgender advocacy and plan events. The month's activities aim to celebrate and raise awareness of the transgender community in Utah.
An important aspect of these events is to increase understanding of transgender people who are often misrepresented.
The month's largest activity will be the first annual gender conference, aptly named: Un(Packing) Gender. The conference will feature speakers, workshops and various activities and will be held at the Main Public Library from 9am to 5pm on Saturday, November 28. Transgender and gender variant people and their family and friends are all invited to attend. For a schedule of conference events, please visit www.utahpridecenter.org.
TransAction will host a number of events throughout the month. Social activities are being held each Tuesday during the normally scheduled group time. Please see attached schedule of events.
In addition to the conference, the group wishes to highlight two events: a guest spoken word artist, the Athens Boys Choir, who will perform on November 21st , and a film, "Transgender Revolution," followed by a discussion panel on Nov. 12. Both events, aimed to inform and entertain, are not to be missed!
Transgender Awareness Month is a celebration of the lives of transgender people. Rose Ellen Epstein, the Utah Pride Center's Transgender Youth Programs Coordinator, explained that "it is important for people who are not transgender to learn about gender diversity because we are all limited by following the rules of being a woman or a man. Transgender people have always led the way in freeing us to be who we really are."
Jude McNeil, Director of Youth Programs for the Utah Pride Center says " the T in LGBT is often silent. Transgender people are often overlooked and their voices are not heard. The events being planned by the Utah Pride Center's TransAction group gives voice and visibility to the vibrant transgender community in Utah."
